Salkantay Trek 4 Days - Salkantay Trek 4D3N

Salkantay Trek 4 Days is the shorter version and the best alternative to the Classic Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. This four day trek shows you the highlight of the renowned trek before visiting Machu Picchu.

Worshiped as one of the sacred Andean peaks by locals, Salkantay Mountain is the second tallest in the region after Ausangate.

Salkantay Trek 4D3N begins on the foothills of the snow capped Salkantay peak and takes you down to the cloud forest before your visit to Machu Picchu.

The trek involves hikes through many high mountain passes. The highest point of the Salkantay Trek 4 Days is Salkantay Pass at 4630 metres above sea level (15190 ft). We highly recommend you to spend a few days in Cusco and acclimatise before the trek to avoid altitude sickness.

We have an excellent team of English speaking local tour guides who are also professional mountaineers. They have plenty of knowledge about the local traditions and customs. On this Salkantay Trek 4 Days Trek, you will get a deeper insight into the traditions and customs of the Andean communities living in the region.

We invite you to take a moment to check out our reviews on Tripadvisor.

Itinerary

Day 1Cusco to Soraypampa

Early in the morning, we will be picking you up from your hotel in Cusco. We will then drive to Mollepata. It is a three hours drive. At Mollepata, we will be stopping for breakfast.

After relishing a typical breakfast, we will be driving you further for an hour to Challacancha. This is the starting point of the Salkantay Trek 4 Days to Machu Picchu.

After a short safety briefing, we will begin with a three hours hike up the hill to Soraypampa. We will be stopping for lunch at Soraypampa campsite overlooking the Salkantay Humantay Peaks. Our campsite is just a few metres away at 3800 metres (11750 ft).

This is the coldest campsite on this Salkantay Trek 4D3N. We highly recommend you to carry some extra layers of clothes.

You will have an option to hike further for an hour to see the turquoise Andean lake, Humantay Lake.

Day 2Soraypampa - Chaullay or Collpampa

We will be serving breakfast at around 0530 AM. We will then start hiking to Salkantay Pass. At 4650 metres (15200 ft.), this is the highest pass on the Salkantay Trek 4 Days to Machu Picchu. We will have a brief stop at the pass for you to contemplate the view.

We will then hike down  the hill to Huayracpunku. Here we will be stopping for lunch.

After relishing a typical Andean meal, we will be hiking through the dense tropical jungle to our second night’s campsite in Chaullay or Colcapampa.

Day 3Chaullay or Colcapampa - Hidro Electrica - Aguas Calientes.

After an early morning breakfast, we will begin the trek through the jungle. On our way, we will be crossing the Lluskmayo River and some small brooks before reaching La Playa.

After a six hours hike we will be reaching a coffee plantation. Here you will be touring the farm. You will be introduced to the traditional way of harvesting coffee.

We will also be visiting some farms where you will get to savour tropical fruits like passion fruits and more.

After lunch, we will be taking a bus through Santa Teresa to Hidro Electrica. We will then be hiking for three hours along the railway tracks to reach Aguas Calientes town. This is the gateway to Machu Picchu.

We will be accommodating you in an ensuite hotel room here. You can visit the renowned hot springs in town.

Day 4Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco

We will be leaving quite early in the morning to visit Machu Picchu. The hotel crew will be handing over a snack box. Then we will be taking the bus up to the main entrance of the citadel. This will be a 25 minutes uphill drive.

Once at the entrance of the citadel, our local expert will assist you in cleaning the security control. Often we are among the first group to enter as you will have the opportunity to witness the sunrise here.

We will give you a two hours guided tour of the emblematic Incan ruins. On this tour, we will introduce you to different parts of the complex. You will be visiting the remains of royal quarters and Inca temples. Our guide will walk you through the ceremonial sites, farming terraces among other significant sites.

After the tour, you will have some free time to explore the citadel on your own. If you have booked your climb to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountain, our guide will be directing you to the entrance.

Please note, you must book your tickets to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountain in advance. We request you to advise us at the time of booking the tour.

Alternatively, you can hike to Sun Gate. It requires no pre-booking. Sun Gate offers a unique view of the Inca ruin. Those on Inca Trail enter the citadel from here.

It takes two hours to hike back and forth from the citadel to Sun Gate.

Later, we will be taking the bus back to Aguas Calientes town. From here you will be boarding the train back to Ollantaytambo. Our representative will be meeting you at the train station and will transfer you back to the city of Cusco.
