Tour Details

The three days short Salkantay Trek Peru to Machu Picchu is the best alternative to the classic 5 days Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. Salkantay Trek is voted as one of the most scenic treks in the world by National Geographic Travel magazine.

The high altitude trek is 48 kilometres long and takes you to the highest point, Abra Salkantay or Salkantay Pass at 4650 metres above sea level. This is one of the most cherish-able experiences in South America.

The trek offers breathtaking views at every turn. Salkantay Trail starts at the Andes near the sacred Salkantay Mountain and takes you through pristine colourful lagoons to the cloud forest and tropical Andean farms.

We highly recommend you to spend 2-3 days in Cusco before the trek and acclimate to avoid altitude sickness.

Day 1Cusco - Mollepata - Sorayapampa - Salkantaypass - Chaullay

We will be picking you up from your hotel early in the morning. We will then embark on a four hours drive along the South Valley of Cusco to Sorayapampa. Along the way, we will have a brief stop in Mollepata.

This is one of the towns on our way. Here you can buy some last minute things you may need for the three days Short Salkantay Trek Peru.

In Soraypampa, we will be serving you breakfast. Our crew will be organising your things on the mule back and then we will start the Short Salkantay Trek Peru with a gradual uphill hike for three hours to the highest point of the trek, Salkantay Pass.

From here, you will have a breathtaking view of the entire valley snuggled in between the snow capped peaks. From here we will be descending to the lunch camp.

After relishing an authentic Peruvian meal for lunch, we will start with a down hill hike to the Amazon cloud forest. Along our way, we will be passing through different sites where our guide will be giving you a guided tour.

We will then reach a remote village called Chaullay where we will be camping for the night.

Day 2Chaullay - La Playa - Aguas Calientes

At 0600 AM, after releasing an authentic and protein rich breakfast, we will be hiking through the Santa Teresa valley to La Playa. We will be crossing many orchid farms, rivers and waterfalls. We will also be visiting some avocado plantations.

Our guide will be giving you a tour of some farms and will be explaining the traditional farming techniques used by the farmers here. We will then be hiking to Colpapampa. It is home to a beautiful waterfall. Here you will have the opportunity to spot the Peruvian National Bird – Andean Cock of the rock.

At La Playa, we will have lunch and will part ways with our porters, muleteers and chef. We will then be embarking on a road trip to Hidro Eletrica. From Hidro Eletrica, we will be hiking along the railway lines to Aguas Calientes. This is the same route that the renowned American explorer, Hiram Bingham III took when he rediscovered Machu Picchu.

At Aguas Calientes, we will be accommodating you in an ensuite hotel room. You will have the evening to yourself so you can spend some time at the hot springs or simply explore the town.

At 0700 PM, our guide will be meeting you at the lobby of the hotel and will be explaining about the following day’s itinerary. We will then meet at the local restaurant for dinner.

Day 3Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco

Rise and Shine! We will be taking an early morning bus up to Machu Picchu citadel. Here our guide will be assisting you to enter the citadel. Then we will give you a two hours guided tour of Machu Picchu.

On this tour you will be visiting the main square, remains of Inca temples, farming terraces, ceremonial sites and more. After the tour you will have some free time to explore the citadel on your own.

If you intend to climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountain, our guide will direct you to the entrance. Please note you must book your entrance tickets in advance. Alternatively you can hike to Sun gate. It is the entrance to Machu Picchu for those on Inca Trail.

You will get a spectacular view of the citadel from Sun Gate. It is a two hours walk to and fro. Then you will be taking the bus back to Aguas Calientes town. Here we will give you some free time so you can have lunch (not included).

Later that evening, you will be boarding the train back to Ollantaytambo. Our representative will be meeting you at the train station and will be transferring you back to your hotel in Cusco.
